Scissor Lift - Safety First

One of the most important safety measures, that every engineer must take care of, involves Scissor Lift Safety. It needs to be considered as one of the most potential tools that might hurt people, especially engineers if they were careless in its handling. Being a part of the society makes it obligatory for the engineers to be extra careful while handling such equipments. Here, let’s have a look at safety measures while managing Scissor, Lift.

The question is what kind of scissor lift can you get in the market. Well, they are available in many models of varying capacity and size. So, naturally there’s quite a variation of prices also. It is, therefore, important for the engineer at site to make assessment of the required machine that will deliver the needed results. Apart from that, a very important issue is the compliance of the machine. Complying with the standards on installation at site should never be overlooked. The relevant British Standard of Scissor Lift compliance is BS EN1570: 1999.

Scissor Lift

Having decided the requirements of a scissors lift at site, one has to define its loading capacity, which may vary from 450kg up to 9,500kg. Next, the point of concern is how to avoid accidental injuries and ensure a safe operation of the machine while handling such heavy loads. The answer is not difficult to seek. To start with, the location of the lift has to be assured by the supplier of the lift that it is safe and correct location for its installation. Further, the compliance to British Standard needs to be checked on the spot and questions concerning the safety measures during its installation should also be clarified. An example would be the inclusion of burst valves while locking the lift.

There’s a difference between a simple and a good scissor lift. We understand that lifts are required for lifting heavy objects, but how to determine their reliability or dependability. That can be helped in two ways. One is to ensure the quality of materials used and the manufacturing processes followed for producing it. The other is to seek help of professionals and that includes engineers lift suppliers and people who might have already used similar machine. For choosing the right machine for your specific job, you need to consider the loading capacity, correct height and position.

In Asia, there is no height regulation as of date, but in New York, the height regulation that came into force in 2005, is still valid. The idea of putting it into practice was to perk up the level of safety for different engineering practices and that included construction too, and hence lifts industries. Height regulation instructs that training be given to all workers that are required to handle machines. The contention is that training helps workers to better understand the importance of safety measures while working on machines and thus brings awareness to follow safety measures. This increased awareness of safety measures helps the operators of different machines to choose better and more appropriate machines, including lifts, for use.
